Taco Tuesday: Poblano’s Mexican Grill & Bar

This McMullen Booth Road restaurant asks the question: How many tacos can you eat in less than an hour?

We all love tacos, right?

At least I’m assuming everyone who reads this column does.

But do you love the tasty tortilla-wrapped treats enough to down nearly two dozen of them in under an hour?

That is the question – or I should say challenge – posed by the owners of Poblano’s, a modern Mexican bar and grill located in the Oakbrook Shopping Plaza on McMullen Booth Road.

As part of their Taco Monday Madness theme, diners are offered to participate in their “20 in 40 Taco Challenge”.

The premise is as simple as it sounds: consume 20 tacos in less than 40 minutes, and you will forever live in Poblano’s dining infamy.

Should you complete the task, you earn a T-shirt and your meal will be paid for. Also, your name and picture will be placed on the Wall of Fame, as well as on the Poblano’s website and Facebook page.

“We’ve only had 13 people complete the challenge since we started it a couple of years ago, so it’s not as easy as it looks,” manager John Garvin said. “The record is only 30. Those things are filling.”

The tacos can be had in a variety of ways, from the authentic Mexicanos version with pico de gallo, onions and tomatoes, to the more Americanized Suprema edition, featuring lettuce, sour cream and shredded cheese available in either hard or soft shells.

One drawback is they only offer beef, steak and chicken varieites. But what they lack in variety they make up for by filling the shells with hearty helpings of flavorful slabs of meat.

Tilapia fish tacos, taco salad and tacos de Carne Asada are also on the menu, which is loaded with all sorts of traditional Mexican fare such as enchiladas, burritos, quesadillas and chimichangas, just to name a few.

Although the tacos are a bit costly ($9.99 for two, $10.99 for three), the meals come with sides of beans and rice. On Mondays the tacos cost just $.99, and can be had with a $1.99 house Margarita from the full liquor bar.

If you’re in the area be sure to stop by and check out this unique Mexican eatery.

And if you feel up to it, take the taco challenge.

It’s a cool concept in this “Man vs. Food” era, and one that helps make dining at Poblano’s a fun-filled experience.
