A Seminole man is dead after being involved in a motorcyle accident that closed a major Clearwater intersection Thursday afternoon.
Derek Jon Diamond, of Seminole, was riding a 2003 Honda motorcycle southbound on Belcher Road and crossed over Drew Street when he crashed into the door of a 1999 Mercury sedan, according to Clearwater Police.
"Speed does not appear to be a contributing factor," Elizabeth Watts, police spokeswoman, said in an email.
Alfred A. Belanger, of New Port Richey, was driving his Mercury sedan northbound on Belcher Road when he approached Drew Street and tried to turn left into the parking lot of the Hess gas station. Belanger, 83, turned into Diamond's path, according to investigators.
Diamond, 50, hit the right, front door of Belanger's Mercury and died at the scene from his injuries, according to police. Diamond was wearing a helmet, according to investigators.
Belanger and his wife Patricia, 82, who was in the passenger seat, were not injured, according to police.
Alcohol or drugs are not believed to be a factor in the crash, police said.

Time for gramps to put down the keys and sell the car. What a shame.

Complete shame. I know I've thought of a motorcycle to get around the nonstop rush hour traffic and drivers that drivers that shouldn't be driving, but that is just stomach turning.
