A convertible heading eastbound on Chestnut Street at Fort Harrison Avenue is Clearwater Police's latest Red Light Camera Violator of the Week.
The video, posted Nov. 1 on the police department Facebook page, shows the car going through the light nearly four seconds after it turns red.
The violation comes with a $158 fine.
The video generated several comments in support of the controversial cameras.
"Seeing these videos make me see the reason and need for red light cameras," Keith Phillips said.
Others see the video as a safety tool.
"And a reminder not to GO as soon as your light turns green," Maggie Hoffman Jewett said.

These red light cameras are more about generating revenue than about safety. If you don't believe this look at the vendors who are often publically traded companies with continually growing revenues. If you really want to make intersections more safe, simply increase the lag times from when one intersection's light turns red and the other intersection's light turns green. These cameras are just another money making scheme foisted upon the public as an additional fee or tax revenue generator.

Should they increase the lag time I have no doubt that people will get used to it, take advantage of, and still do the same thing. So it's increased revenue, what's wrong with that? We will pay one way or another and may as well have the law breakers pay first, since they don't seem to care.

I think the red light cameras possibly create more accidents because people feel forced to either slam on their brakes or cross not to be caught by the camera.

DeElizabethan? "Me doth think thou dost protest a bit much, fair lady." Your missing the point here entirely. Studies have show as Michael portends that these cameras do create more rear end accidents, and more importantly to my point, revenue from them does not decrease over time as one would suspect but instead provides a steady stream of revenue for the vendors, state and local municipalities. If you will do your research before expressing your opinion you would more than likely see what is really happening here; unfair taxation without adequate representation.

I firmly believe that the people who complain about the cameras are the very one's who run the lights. My life is far more important than any ignorant remark made by David & Michael. No one wins when an irresponsible and careless driver decides to outrun a red light. Ask the very people who lost a loved one, through no fault of their own, how they feel about the cameras. Personally, I would love to see one on every corner. I won't run through a light and what gives some people the idea that the law is not written for them. Entitlement???? I don't think so.

Janet,
I have recieved 3 tickets in the almost 20 years of driving. To assume that my comments are based on ignorance, I will point you to my two Masters Degrees. But becuase you so quickly went to labelling instead of an intelligent conversation I shows you probably don't have a factual agrument. You agrument is an emotional one based on no facts what so ever. So here are some facts Janet since your assume that David and I are ignorant.
These facts are brought to you by the Federal Highway Administration:
Red-Light Camera's increase rear-end crashes by 14.9%
Also increase injuries at those lights by 24%.
But those accidents were by no fault of the person slamming on their breaks. I guess they are working, because the accident wasn't caused by running the red light. There is a minor reduction in Side-Crashes, but the reduction is minimal. The dollar value of the per cap accident goes down, but the gross amount of money on accidents is higher because of the increase in rear-end crashes. So there you go Janet, my ignorant comment.

Hey Janet, ouch! Implying by Michael and I's comments that we are ignorant is a hurtful thing to say to others and brings down the level of the social discourse this forum provides us all. While there are many reasons red lights are run and the outcomes from those actions can often be tragic, I'm am certainly not condoning this type of behavior. I am merely questioning the wisdom of red light cameras being the best solution to solve the problem and also pointing out an obvious ulterior motive for their usage. Unfortuntely also, people lose loved ones all the time through no fault of their own. That's life, no one ever said it was fair or just. Mind you now, I'm not judging you here, I'm just expressing my right to freedom of speech and clarifying for you how I feel about red light cameras being deployed in the city, county and state.

If drivers were courteous, defensive and smart, they would not be running red lights, we would not have avoidable accidents and people would not be slinging insultstpothers who opinions differ from theirs

Well spoken Sue, your expressing a paradoxical utopian if here though, unfortunately however, in the real world many drivers are neither courteous, defensive or smart and do run red lights and cause accidents. As far as those insulting others with differing opinions, often that is the last retort of cowards and fools, my dear. Please do not take offense or misconstrue my usage of, "my dear" as condesending as it was used as a salutation of upmost honor and respect for you and your valued opinion.
