Coast Guard City Celebration A Blast
Adm. Robert J. Papp designated Clearwater a Coast Guard City during a celebration Friday.
It was a busy week for Adm. Robert J. Papp. There was the State of the Union address in Washington, D.C. Jan. 24. Then a conference in Ottawa the next day.
But of all the places Papp had to be, Clearwater was the stop he looked forward to most.
Papp proclaimed Clearwater a Coast Guard City, the first in Florida and one of 14 nationally, in a special ceremony as part of Blast Friday (Jan. 27).
The designation is given based on support to local Coast Guard stations and its members. Clearwater is home to two posts including the Air Station Clearwater, the busiest in the nation and Station Sand Key.
Papp said that for Coast Guard families who frequently move around, finding a home is much like building sandcastles.
The designation lets Coast Guard families know "Clearwater is a place you can call home," Papp said.
