Belcher Road Turn Lane Closed Through the Weekend

The east bound, left hand turn lane on Belcher Road at Gulf to Bay Boulevard will be closed through Monday afternoon.

A section of one of Clearwater’s busiest intersections will be closed throughout the weekend.

The east bound, left hand turn lane on Belcher Road and Gulf to Bay Boulevard will be closed through Monday afternoon, according to Kris Carson, spokeswoman with the Florida Department of Transportation.

A leaky pipe about nine feet under ground is to blame, Carson said. She said the old stormwater drain needs to be replaced, but to do that all three lanes would have to close.

“We're basically doing a band aid with small repairs and fixes," Carson said.

Maintenance crews are performing a temporary repair and expect to have the lane reopened Monday afternoon.

"FDOT has closed left EB lane of Gulf-to-Bay @ Belcher due to 'depression' in road. Expected closure thru Mon," tweeted @TampaBayTraffic.

This is not the first time this section of road has caused headaches for drivers.

Crews patched up a one foot by four foot section of that same area of road in April. The four foot depression was not caused by a sinkhole but rather a slow leak from the underground pipe.

“This has always given our maintenance personell an issue,” Carson said.

This needs to be fixed correctly. Take a little longer and do it right.
